Lose Weight By The Numbers- How A Casino Game Helped Me Lose Weight, Part I

My lessons in life have come from varied experiences. But the situation that brought my life the most value occurred while playing a casino gambling game. And it happened to create one the most profound and positive changes in my life.My wife and I were having dinner at a local casino restaurant. As a habit, I fill out Keno tickets while waiting for our food to be served. I never place a bet with the ticket, it’s always just for fun. Simply explained, a Keno ticket is approximately five inches wide by seven inches tall, has 80 numbers labeled from 1-40 in the top grid and 41-80 in the bottom grid. You pick as many numbers as you wish, up to a total of 20 numbers. Then the casino randomly selects 20 numbered BINGO balls. You win money based on how many numbers you selected match the twenty numbers the casino drew.As my wife Camille and I sat in conversation, I grabbed a blank Keno ticket and selected the numbers I play all the time: 1, 8, 11, 43, 45 and 65. Those numbers all have meaning and relevance to my life, of which I will spare you the explanation. The result board lit up over and over again with its 20 randomly drawn numbers. After five games, the best I had done was to match 2 of the 6 numbers. At least 3 numbers are required to receive any kind of pay-off when you place a bet.By this time our much anticipated lunch was served and we began to eat. During our meal we were discussing how pitiful my outcome was for the five games. I explained to my wife that I picked the same six numbers every time and why I chose each number. With calculated brilliance my wife uttered those profound words that have changed my life forever. She said, “just change the numbers.” Without missing a beat, I grabbed a blank keno ticket and X’d out 13, 17, 18, 23, 24, and 28. My impulse selections came without forethought or planning. But most importantly the numbers were DIFFERENT from my usual choices. Our eyes were glued to the results board as we waited for the next game to begin. We held our breathe as the numbers lit up one by one. We looked at each other in disbelief as the twentieth number illuminated the Keno board. I had selected 5 out of the 6 numbers correctly. The odds of picking five out of six correctly are approximately 1 in 322.We were stunned. My life changed from that moment on. The profound lesson was that I could transform and improve my outcome by changing my way of thinking and my habits. That very keno ticket is taped to my bathroom mirror. It’s a constant reminder of my esoteric lesson – change what I do and what I think and things will change.”It all boils down to this. . .’If you keep doin what you’re doin, you’ll keep gettin what you’re gettin’. . .Or, as the famous quote by Benjamin Franklin says, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
